Iona Pilgrimage

THE CELTIC WAY

A Pilgrimage to Iona

June 14-23, 2010

They stepped ashore on a stony beach on the south shore of the island.  It was the year 563.
As Columba walked ashore ahead of the rest, a young monk called after him,
"But Father, the island is so small!"
Columba turned and said, "Yes. It is small. But it will become great."

For fifteen hundred years Iona has drawn men and women to its spiritual greatness.

It is because of that abiding greatness that we will cross the powerful tidal race between the village of Fionnphort and Mull and come to the small dock within walking distance of the Abbey on Iona.

Together we will explore the Celtic Way, drawing from the extraordinary beauty and peace of Iona, the centuries of prayers that have been offered there, and the spiritual vitality that exists today.

We will walk where Columba and our spiritual ancestors walked. We will listen to their voices, and try to gather into ourselves something of the quality of faith that began to radiate from this place in the late 5th Century, and still does today. Our pace will be relaxed and slow, allowing for spaciousness and opening deeply to the spiritual treasures that await us on this sacred island.

Under the inspired leadership of Herbert O’Driscoll and Carole Crumley, our pilgrimage will weave together sessions on Celtic spirituality with personal free time and opportunities to build our spiritual community through small group sharing and times of silence. We will ground our daily activities in prayer and reflection, joining the Iona Community in their morning and evening worship.

Join us for this potentially life-changing, spirit-enlivening, heart-strengthening journey!

Carole A. Crumley, an Episcopal priest and Shalem's Senior Program Director, is an experienced pilgrimage guide to sacred and secular sites in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States. She has led numerous pilgrimages for Shalem and also directs Shalem's Clergy Spiritual Life and Leadership: Going Deeper Program, an ecumenical program to nurture the spiritual heart and leadership of congregational clergy. She also currently serves as Senior Guardian for the Shalem Society for Contemplative Leadership.

Herbert O’Driscoll, a retired Anglican priest, is the author of some 36 books whose work is widely used by clergy and lay readers in homiletic preparation, and his hymns appear in hymnbooks in Canada, Ireland, England, the United States and mainland China. In his retirement years, he continues to write and compose, traveles widely in the Anglican Communion conducting preaching seminars and conferences, and continues to lead pilgrimages to Ireland, Scotland, England and France for the College of the National Cathedral in Washington D.C.  He also serves as an honorary staff member of Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, British Columbia.

A native of Ireland, he has always felt a special affinity for those centuries during which Celtic Christianity flowered, regarding this period not only as an integral part of his own spiritual formation, but also as a chapter of our Christian story that addresses and enriches us today.
