Gerald May Seminar

Seventh Gerald G. May Seminar with Cynthia Bourgeault

Contemplatives, Mystics, Prophets & Visionaries

April 13-14, 2012

In our world today, the path of Wisdom knowing that is cultivated in contemplative prayer and practice is leading the way in the recovery of Christianity's visionary and prophetic voice.

In her time with us, Cynthia will examine how (and why) this is happening by looking at four contemporary contemplative voices: Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk of the Abbey of Our Lady of Gethsemani, who was a poet/author and social activist; Bruno Barnhart, a Camaldolese monk of New Camaldoli Hermitage and the author of numerous books; Raimon Pannikar, a Roman Catholic theologian whose embrace of Hindu scriptures and Buddhism made him an influential voice in inter-religious dialogue; and Constance FitzGerald, a Carmelite theologian who is known for her interpretation of the writings of John of the Cross.  Each of these individuals will form the focal point of one of Cynthia's talks.

Friday night will be an overview of the topic and a stand-alone evening. On Saturday Cynthia will delve further into the topic and have time for questions and answers. We highly recommend attending both days.

The Gerald May Seminar is offered in memory of the life and legacy of Gerald (Jerry) May, Shalem’s Senior Fellow for Contemplative Theology and Psychology, and to strengthen the great themes of contemplative understanding and practice that Jerry so valued.
